Brake drums are part of your Toyota’s rear braking system, working with brake shoes to slow your car down. Unlike rotors, drums hide the wear on the inside—so problems can go unnoticed until braking power fades.

How to Check Your Toyota Corolla's Brake Drum for Wear

1. Remove the Drum

Safely lift your car and remove the wheel. The brake drum on your Toyota Corolla may slide right off, but sometimes it requires light tapping if rust is present.

2. Check for Deep Grooves

Run your fingers along the inside surface of the drum. Deep grooves, scoring, or pitting can reduce braking effectiveness and usually mean it's time for a new one.

3. Measure the Diameter

Use a brake drum micrometer to check the inside diameter. If it exceeds the maximum limit stamped on the drum, it’s too worn to reuse safely.

4. Look for Heat Spots or Cracks

Overheating can cause dark spots or surface cracks. These signs of stress affect braking consistency and should not be ignored.

5. Test for Vibration

If you feel pulsing or vibration when braking, your drum may be warped or out of round—another sign it’s due for replacement.

Protect Your Wheels with Locking Hardware

Secure your brake upgrades with wheel locks designed to protect your wheels and brake system from theft.
