Lift supports help raise and hold your Toyota's hood safely in place. They're also known as hood struts or gas springs. When they fail, the hood can suddenly drop, making maintenance risky and inconvenient. Did you know that replacing worn lift supports takes just a few minutes with the right tools? Here's how.
How to Replace Lift Supports on a Toyota Corolla
1. Prop the Hood
Before removing anything, use a sturdy hood prop or helper to hold the hood open. This keeps you safe while you replace the old lift supports.
2. Locate the Mounting Points
The lift supports on your Toyota Corolla are attached to ball joints at the base and near the hood. You’ll find a small retaining clip at each end that secures them in place.
3. Remove the Old Supports
Using a flathead screwdriver, gently pry up the retaining clip. Once loosened, the strut will pop off the ball joint. Do this for both ends and set the old support aside.
4. Snap In the New Ones
Align the new lift support over the ball joint and push until it clicks into place. Repeat on the opposite end. You shouldn't need to re-use the old clips—new ones are typically included.
Give Your Corolla a Sporty Edge
While you're upgrading the hood, consider adding edgy spoilers to improve your Corolla's appearance and performance.
